Komodo Island is one of Indonesia’s most iconic and extraordinary destinations, located within the Komodo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in East Nusa Tenggara province. Famed as the natural habitat of the Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) — the world’s largest living lizard — the island draws travelers from around the globe seeking wild encounters, stunning landscapes, and world-class snorkeling.
Spanning roughly 390 square kilometers, Komodo Island is part of a protected archipelago that also includes Rinca, Padar, and dozens of smaller islands. It is rugged and beautiful, with savannah-covered hills, white- and pink-sand beaches, and crystal-clear waters filled with marine life.
The island is most known for its dragon trekking experiences, where visitors are guided by park rangers on marked trails to safely observe the Komodo dragons in their natural environment. These apex predators can grow over 3 meters in length and weigh up to 90 kilograms. Seeing them roam freely in the wild is a rare and unforgettable experience.
Beyond its fearsome reptiles, Komodo Island also offers lush coastal forests, dramatic viewpoints, and pristine coral reefs ideal for snorkeling and diving. The nearby Pink Beach (Pantai Merah), with its rosy-hued sand, is one of only a few in the world and is a favorite stop for travelers
